  • We are still pretty comfortable. 2-0 at home means you just need to score 1 goal away and you force your opponent to have to score 4. We are in control.

  • Could have, should have done more. 2-0 is good but for what we put in it’s a shame not to have done better, especially considering how spent 10 minutes 2 men up.

Let’s not forget how awesome Milik was at the start of last season. Scoring is mental and he’s probably still low on confidence. This is one of the reasons I’d have liked him to play…[Read more]

  • Reina (6.5): A comfortable game for the Spaniard as Nice found themselves struggling for chances.

Hysaj (7): As the defence became more and more comfortable in their position he crept further and further down […]

    • Milik is garbage. We need to offload him.

      • after this match I have a lot of doubts about him, if some solid offer come maybe he could be sold. I would like to see Patrik Schick in Napoli, he has great potentional, but he had some heart problems and I am not sure if he is fine now or not.

    • Positive result, but I am still disapointed because Napoli had to win at least 5:0 if I consider how many chances players had. I don’t agree with Insigne rating, he created few chances but he had a lot of weak shots again, also Milik fail to score to empty net was very dissapointing for me.

Anyway 2:0 is very positive result and we will probably qualify to CL

Now looking forward to match against Hellas and second match against Nice

      Forza Napoli!

    • Schick is fine but going to Inter.

We really need to sort out our transfers.

    • Why did Sarri sub out Mertens when we need goals? Somehow, this 2-0 win doesn’t feel that comfortable at all. The tie should have been put away with the numerous chances we had. Frustrating…

    • Could have, should have done more. 2-0 is good but for what we put in it’s a shame not to have done better, especially considering how spent 10 minutes 2 men up.

Let’s not forget how awesome Milik was at the start of last season. Scoring is mental and he’s probably still low on confidence. This is one of the reasons I’d have liked him to play in the U21 Euros. It would have done him well to get some goals and build his confidence before the season started.

    • We are still pretty comfortable. 2-0 at home means you just need to score 1 goal away and you force your opponent to have to score 4. We are in control.

    • It’d be insanely disappointing if we didn’t win after being up 2-0. 1 goal in the return leg would nearly wrap it up without a full capitulation.

On Milik, It’s a big miss, but he’s doing everything else right. The goals will come for him.

    • If we lose the return leg and go out we dont deserve CL. It’s that simple. We are strong away. We will in the away game as well.

  • Here we are! Napoli are about to kick off their 2017/2018 campaign with the first official match in what is a critical European clash against the French side Nice. Champions League qualification is important on so […]

  • hahhahaaha I definitely tried to block that out from my memory. čśą

  • I definitely agree that the team looks to be more prepared for this season than I can remember. Nice probably is still closer to full match fitness but our boys are probably close to the best they could be at this point. I think what determines this match for us will be more mental than physical. We must finish chances and not make any silly…[Read more]

  • There are a lot of mixed feeling about this Nice side as we get ready for the first match of our two legged battle for Champions League qualification. They certainly seemed one of the most dangerous opponents, […]

  • Sarri met with the press earlier to discuss Napoli’s match against Nice at the San Paolo. Here is what he had to say:

On the effect the match will have on the season
This match concerns the Champions League […]

  • Mario Balotelli and Wesley Sneijder will officially miss the first match of Champions League qualification in the San Paolo as both players were left off the official squad list for the match. Not having to play […]

    • Theoretically this is good development, but I hope it doesn’t mean Napoli become complacent and think it’s a walk in the park. Most of our past losses in Europe comes against supposedly “weak” team. Qualification for UCL is so important I hope the team don’t screw up after all the boasting to the media from the players.

    • I saw both Nice matches against Ajax and I also saw both league games where Nice lost.

Even if they lost they played good football, they will be very dangerous, they play attractive football and their pressing is on high level, but they do not press whole match like Napoli, they do it at intervals. I’m most afraid about their counter attacks and corners where Dante could be a problem. On the other hand their defense is not perfect so if we’ll have little luck we should score more than one goal.

IMO Nice’s biggest advantage is that they already played four competitive matches, two in CL against Ajax and two in league. On the other hand they made a lot of changes in their squad.

I hope that the physical condition of our players will be good enough for 90 minutes, then we can play our game, keep the ball and attack and attack. The key will be eliminate Seri who is a Nice key player and then we can play our game. But the most important thing is not to concede goal at home.

      Forza Napoli!

    • Agreed. Favre is a smart tactician, and I would expect to see less pressing in Wednesday’s match. But when they do press, they will present a handful of opportunities, and the Super-Smurfs up front need to finish their chances when they get them. I expect Allan will start, but whether it is him, Rog, or Zielinski, the person in that midfield role needs to both make Seri’s life difficult and to have a couple of key interventions that start rapid attacks.

I know Sarri dismissed many of the friendlies, but to Wrany’s point, the team looks better prepared physically than any August I can think of since we’ve been able to get video for their matches here in the States. It helps to have no Euros or WC, of course, as we have just about the highest percentage of squad participation in those tourneys (without the traditional depth of truly big clubs). So lots of sound reasons to be optimistic, to go along with all the historic reasons for worry.

      • I definitely agree that the team looks to be more prepared for this season than I can remember. Nice probably is still closer to full match fitness but our boys are probably close to the best they could be at this point. I think what determines this match for us will be more mental than physical. We must finish chances and not make any silly defensive errors.

  • When I think of the nightmare of those matches against Bilbao, I immediately think of this:

  • Yep. It’s been confirmed fake by the club. So ridiculous.

  • After a pre-season filled with mostly highs but also some lows, Napoli managed to close things out with a convincing 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the San Paolo today. Fans will be happy to see the side finish the […]

    • Finally decent performance for whole match, pity that Sarri didn’t make only three substitions, I wanted to see how can same players do for 90 minutes. IMO worst player was Insigne, he had a lot of shots but almost every shot went to moon, unfortunately this is normal with him, he is not able to play whole season at highest level, every summer I hope it will change but… I hope he will do better against Nice

I really liked Jorginho, he played with high intensity and confidence and also Ounas showed great things as sub. player

    • Maggio and Giak need to be replaced and we have a great squad.

    • Watched the game. Overall I think we play well. Ounas is very promising. Espanyol for large part of the game was completely outplayed by Napoli.

Indeed Insigne is poor in this game. It looks like he was trying to shoot down pigeons. Every shot is send way high and way wide. He is trying too hard to get on the score sheet.

  • The Sempre! crew is back as they kick off the new season with their first episode. Tune is as they discuss being paired with Nice in the Champions League play-off round, look at the key dates in the new Serie A […]

  • I agree that one of the strangest things about this market is our lack of interest in a RB especially considering that as of right now, we have 3 LBs on the team. It would be more justifiable if Sarri demonstrated some faith in Maggio, but he doesn’t, and nobody wants to see Hysaj forced to spend almost every minute of the season on the pitch. His…[Read more]

  • The finishing worries me at times. It can seem like they are a bit too lackadaisical, like there isn’t the right sense of urgency.

Like @wrany said, sometimes Insigne gives me the impression of shooting just for the sake of shooting.

  • From what I’ve understood, they decided to let the draw determine who plays first at home instead of seeding. Having to play that second match away is worrying to me.

  • Napoli took on Bournemouth today in their penultimate friendly of the pre-season. The Napoli players seemed to have settled into themselves and put on display some of the entertaining football we’ve become […]

    • ok, in 10 days we will play CL match against Nice so I am starting to be very nervous after what I saw. We played decent first half but there were a lot of inaccurate passes and Insigne’s shots were very useless, which is unfortunately normal thing with him. In second half players totaly stopeed play, IMO they were totaly down both physicaly and mentaly. Defence looked very similar as Benitez defence, substitute players played worse than players before them, Sarri has only 10 days to fix these things, it’s not a lot of time…

    • I feel the same. The lack of investment jn defense and goal bothers me and we really need a Mr X.

We concede too mich and players seem reluctant.

      • I am not sure if it’s about players in defence, I would say it’s more about system. It worked very good in first Sarri season with same players, but it seems it worse and worse every year. I just hope it is only pre-season issue and it will be much better in the season, but it still makes me very nervous before CL qualification matches

    • Lots of work to do before we are ready for the UCL qualifiers. Our players should really scale back on their big talk. I rather they proof it on the field. Just days ago, Callejon was boasting to the media that our attack is as good as Real Madrid. Well, we can’t even outscore Bournemouth. So far as I can recall in this pre-season, we have drawn 2 games, won 1 and lost 1. Not a fantastic result by any measure. Earlier games against small teams don’t count.

    • Same domination in possession but somehow the other team gets some bs goal. Good news is nobody got hurt. Bad news is Napoli tends to lax against lower level teams.

Just curious why are we playing first vs Nice? Aren’t we the seeded team?

      • From what I’ve understood, they decided to let the draw determine who plays first at home instead of seeding. Having to play that second match away is worrying to me.

    • The finishing worries me at times. It can seem like they are a bit too lackadaisical, like there isn’t the right sense of urgency.

Like @wrany said, sometimes Insigne gives me the impression of shooting just for the sake of shooting.

    • Its too early to worry. Lets see how they look once they take the field in a real game. I have great confidence in the team this year.

    • There is another way to look at Insigne’s shooting: he is trying to find new angles in these friendlies, and doesn’t seem to be getting down on himself as much. So I’ve been pleased. I’m watching more for positioning and decision-making at this stage, which is why I’m comfortable with where the attack is, but still very concerned about the defense. Again in this match, opposition players had some clear shots at goal from outside the box that they should not be getting. You won’t find a bigger believer in K2 than me, but he’s been making 2-3 positional errors per game. He needs to cut that in half next week. As down as we all are on relying on Maggio, he’s covered for Maksi and K2 a couple of times and showed pace and awareness that I didn’t expect from him at this age. So as Brandon says, let’s not worry, but let’s hope Sarri is enjoying the fact that positional mistakes are showing up now when he can fix them.

      • problem with Insigne is that he is trying these shots almost in every game and his success ratio is like 1:100. I agree with you about Koulibaly, he doesn’t look confident for whole pre-season, hope it will be better in competition matches

      • Insigne could very well be going thru his usual once a season “loss of form”. Last time he had a goal drought, it lasted from April to October when he scored a brace away to Udinese. And then he scored 20 goals for the rest of the season. Hopefully not so long this time. We will need him at top form for the UCL qualifiers.

    • BTW, why was the goal in the 1st half credited to Mertens? It looked like an Insigne shot that took a deflection off Mertens,

  • Yesterday we mentioned that Nice and Hoffenheim offered Napoli the greatest threats to their Champions League dreams. Unfortunately, the draw was not so kind to the Azzurri and they will have to face the Southern […]

    • omg, I wished anyone except Nice, we got harderst opponent

as is mentioned in article they are very dangerous, I saw both matches against Ajax and Nice played very good, their biggest advantage will be fact that their season already started with matches against Ajax, but we have to go through this, if we won’t it will be disaster from sport and financial view and statements from our players about Scudetto will be only statements again

    • Our luck in UCL draws really sucks. Last season, we draw Real Madrid. Now Nice which is the strongest team. Well… still better than Sevilla, Liverpool…

    • btw it seems that Napoli will have to play 3 matches in 7 days:

      16.8. – Napoli vs. Nice
19.8. – Hellas vs. Napoli(if it wont change)
      22.8. – Nice vs Napoli

    • Yeah this is going to be a tough one, but probably better than drawing Hoffenheim, and certainly better than the Bilbao draw a couple of years back. These games always happen at the worst time in the year so they can be pretty unpredictable. Let’s hope the team can stay focused and get through this. Winning these games would be a fantastic way to start the season.

  • The influence of money is reaching new levels now. Pretty much anything can happen at any moment. I always prepare myself for the unexpected. I think the past Quagliarella and Higuain sales are a reminder of that.

Anyway, I think/hope we will do something after UCL qualifiers. Rulli makes too much sense to me. I want to believe we have a deal in…[Read more]
