The Azzurrini played their second match away to Chievo on Sunday losing 1-0 in a hard fought battle right through to the 90th minute. Napoli coach Saurini threw out a 4-4-2 formation against a 3-4-1-2 Chievo side. The first half, encompassed a Napoli side that played with much of their momentum that carried over from their opening match day win against Genoa and Shakthar in the UEFA Youth League. In the 3rd minute, the Azzurrini created the first chance of the match. A dangerous right side corner found the feet of midfielder Gaetano who came close to tapping it in with Zerbin beside him to knock in the rebound but Cheivo goalkeeper Fillipo Pavoni shut the door making a clean save. In the 19th minute, Napoli defender Michael Scarf was quick to react on the counter taint advantage of the gialloblu’s 3 man defense by making a long ball up field to forward Ciro Palmieri and then crossing it to Gaetano who sailed a shot over the crossbar. The luck of the Azzurrini ran out when Lorenzo Tonelli anticipated a powerful shot by Rivi which unintentionally struck his hand causing a Chievo free kick outside the box. In the 25th minute, Chievo Forward Lorenzo Rivi scored a well connected header in the air from a cross by right forward Andrea Isufaj. After being down 1-0, Napoli seemed to put the goal behind them creating more offensive opportunities but could find an equalizer.
The second half started out with Napoli midfielder Micillo suffering a lower-body injury and replaced by ex-Carpi midfielder Francesco Mezzoni. More bad luck went Napoli’s way as a header by Esposito from a Gaetano corner was deflected wide. More chances were missed as the talented Gaetano made various link up plays with forward Zerbin and Palmieri but could not solve Pavoni throughout the match. Unfortunately, after the beautiful displays against Genoa and Shakthar the Azzurrini fell short despite a good hard second half. The final result ended in a 1-0 victory for a great defensive gialloblu side. One important thing to note is that promising midfielder Antonio Marino (born in the 2000 class) made his début substituting an exhausted Gianluca Gaetano.
