After the firing of coach Giampaolo Saurini and losing 5-0 to Lazio on Saturday, the Azzurrini carried their bad form over to Manchester. Losing 3-1 to Manchester City’s youth team, Napoli battled hard against a very strong and young talented Manchester side. Manchester City was better tactically prepared and dominated Napoli in the first half retaining most of the possession and creating many offensive chances.
Manchester City’s promising young talented striker Braham Diaz, opened the scoring in the 21st minute receiving a dangerous pass in the box by midfielder Touaizi Zoubdi to tap it home. Shortly after, Manchester kept pouring on the attacking pressure and struck the crossbar from a set piece outside the box by defender Edward Francis. The first half ended with Napoli sitting defensively on their back heels and only registered one shot on goal from a dangerous curler by Gaetano that was stopped.
The Azzurini started the second half with a bolstered attack and managed to tie the game with a wonderful chip by midfielder Raffaele Russo off a neatly threaded through ball pass by Gianluca Gaetano . Ten minutes later in the 48th minute Napoli conceded a penalty as defender Giuseppe Esposito committed a holding foul in the box during a corner kick. Diaz scored again making it 2-1 as he placed the ball perfectly in the right hand corner catching Napoli’s keeper going the opposite side. Napoli quickly responded with an equalizer off a header from a set piece by Senese but was ruled offside. Manchester dented the hopes of the Azzurrini by scoring in the 65th minute from a left side cross finding its way past the Napoli defenders onto the foot of forward Benjamin Garre.
Although the Azzurrini got off to a slow start in the first half they improved their play in the second half mirroring their senior Napoli team in tonight’s performance. However, defensive tactical mistakes cost them in the end. Manchester City remain undefeated in the group with nine points while Napoli currently sit tied in second with Feyenoord at four points. Napoli face off against Manchester City again in Naples on Wednesday November 1st which be crucial in determining their advancement into the next round. The Azzurrini host Juventus U-19 this Saturday which will be an entertaining one proving them a chance to redeem themselves.October 17, 2017 at 8:20 pm #5485
