Napoli struggled early and late in the match but came away with 3 crucial points. The away fixture at Genoa is often very problematic for this side so getting the win was difficult but important. The team will need to make some adjustements defensively going forward however as they had too many miscues today.
Reina (7): Reina was beat by two well worked goals, there was very little he could have done. Made a very important save with his foot on an effort that was redirected by Koulibaly. Did everything that could reasonably have been asked of him.
Hysaj (5.0): Tried to get forward often but missed too many crosses to be even remotely effective. Aside from that, he was nowhere to be seen on the second Genoa goal and gave up an extremely dangerous turnover that forced Reina into a great save.
Chiriches (5.0): Made some decent choices with the ball but was simply not good enough defensively. Was also too passive on the second Genoa goal and was out of position on the first one. Lack of depth at centerback is a real issue for this team.
Koulibaly (7.00): Koulibaly had one glaring error that nearly led to a goal in minute 78. Aside from that he was a rock. He threw in some strong tackles and played well with the ball at his feet.
Ghoulam (6.5): Ghoulam was responsible and ventured forward well. He had some interesting link up play throughout the match but not as precise as usual. Still solid.
Zielinski (7.0): Had a slow start to the match but really grew into the second half. He had some strong tackles and some good distribution. Was often hampered by Hysaj’s inability to link-up down the right flank.
Diawara (7.5): A lot has been said about Napoli’s front three this season and with good reason. That being said, an often over looked contributor is whoever plays deep in the midfield three. Diawara and Jorginho run the game from back there and today Diawara did just that. He misplayed a few passes but he was tireless in defense and had a truly astonishing pass to Mertens on his second goal.
Hamsik (6.0): Hamsik did well to find space but his shooting boots are sorely lacking right now. He missed from in close with a gaping goal behind the defender covering him and he had countless shots from long range go wide.
Callejon (6.5): Did a good job of tracking back and had some good exchanges with Rog and Zielinski. He suffers from Hysaj’s offensive struggles.
Mertens (8.25): Mertens was man of the match today. He scored two absolute beauties and created what was eventually ruled to be an own goal. He carried his team through a tricky road match where the defense faltered.
Insigne (7.0): Often demonstrated great patience on the ball and showed impressive determination in his defensive work. Set Mertens free for the own goal with beautiful through ball.
Rog (6.5): Brought in good energy and hustle. He pressed well and very nearly set up Hysaj for a goal.
