The first half saw Napoli start bright and in control. The first 10 minutes or so being all Napoli. Getting their legs under them early and pinging the ball around easily and with that beautiful flow. Roma would have a very strong 5-7 minute stretch after, clogging lanes and getting a few half chances from corners. After that, it was all Napoli, and not long after they would find a goal. Testing Roma’s offside press, Mertens beat it, then after trying to drop off a pass, it took a fortuitous deflection off of De Rossi and Insigne was able to finish the chance and pull ahead.
The 2nd half was a bit more of a gritty affair, but not without chances. Early in the second half Napoli kept control and after about 10 minutes a huge chance would come. Mertens would pick the ball from Manolas, and be clear in on Allison, but he put the ball past the far post. Roma would get their biggest chance later on. In the 70th minute, a cross would meet the head of Fazio, and much like last year in Rome, Pepe Reina made a fully outstretched save to his right saving Napoli’s bacon.
Reina – 7.0 – That save was worth a lot.
Hysaj – 6.0 – Hysaj started well enough, but was abused by Perotti later in the game.
Albiol – 7.0 – The combo of Albiol and K2 were brilliant today. Dzeko was in their pocket and got him extremely frustrated.
Koulibaly – 7.0 – Kouibaly was, well, the K2 we have come spoiled to have.
Ghoulam – 6.5 – Ghoulam did well, especially in the first half, combining with Hamsik and Insigne. Was solid in defense as well.
Allan – 6.5 – Allan. Dude. you scare me. 17/18 is full on beast mode from the Brazilian.
Jorginho – 6.5 – Was very good today, especially in the first half. He was finding all the right combinations to unlock Roma in the pockets of space, and it led to Hamsik having a great game also.
Hamsik – 7.0 – Marek, Capitano, you were excellent today. Getting between the lines and bursting forward. Are you back now?!
Callejon – 6.0 – Workmanlike from Callejon. Never flashy, but maybe not at his absolute best today.
Mertens – 6.5 – Dries was lively as ever today. He caused Roma’s defense a ton of problems. Got a few chances, and his movement led to Insigne’s goal.
Insigne – 6.5 – Lorenzo got the game deciding goal (albeit off a deflection) and caused Peres absolute hell today.
Zielinski – Quiet from the Polishman today. Had a few nice breaks forward though.
Diawara – Diawara did well in a consolidating role today.
Rog – The RW might be a calling for him. It could be new role for him.
