Both Edinson Cavani and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis were at the Football Leader conference to receive awards; ADL for Financial Fair Play and Cavani for Football Leader 2017. They both had kind things to say about the city and fans. Cavani also left statements earlier in the day saying that he would only return to Italy with Napoli, and only while still at the top of his game. De Laurentiis did again mention that he started the club from nothing, but also very wisely added “the only thing that left was our great fanbase” — a sign of the progress De Laurentiis has made in the past year in terms of communication. He also revealed that Napoli will be participating in the Audi cup set to take place at the start of August and which will include Liverpool, Bayern and Atletico. Among those receiving awards, were also Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli and Neapolitan Fabio Quagliarella. Below you can find the important bit from De Laurentiis revealing Napoli’s transfer strategy at the goalkeeper position:
What can we say about Reina and all the push and pull happening?
What push and pull? The media has to do their job and sell, so everyday they have to invent something. Maybe 5 % is true 95% is invented. Our keeper has a contract. It’s also only right for Napoli to think of the future. Any team that wants to have a bright future must plant now. When someone gets to a certain age, even if they are healthy and talented, you have to start thinking about putting someone just as extraordinary next to them, someone who can be used immediately and can be with you for the next 10 years.
“Just as extraordinary” and “can be used for the next 10 years” is a tough combination. I still think that leaves the likes of Szczesny and Leno is pole position while also still including Meret and Cragno as possible targets should the club feel they have the talent and personality to compete at the highest levels.
